Majority in California not married

UPI) -- U.S. census figures released Wednesday showed the majority of California are single or separated, a first in at least 50 years for the state. The census said 48.5 percent of Californians were living with a spouse in 2006, compared with 52 percent in 2000, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported. The statistics said about 30 percent of women in the state have never married versus 38 percent of men.
Hans Johnson, a demographer with the Public Policy Institute of California told the newspaper real estate prices were one factor for the latest figures.
"California is no longer as attractive to married couples and families as it once was," Johnson said. "If you're a married couple, and you've just had a kid and you want to buy a house, it's really tough."
A gender disparity may also play a factor in the falling number of marriages, the report said, as the Census Bureau said the state has 118 men for every 100 women in the marrying age bracket it defined as 15-44.
